Many people who have never consulted a chiropractor are understandably nervous about their first visit.  In order to better serve and educate our patients, we have included a brief introduction outlining your first visit at the clinic.  This way, you know exactly what to expect before coming to the clinic.  Upon entering the clinic, you will be warmly greeted by our chiropractic assistant as well as by Dr. Skolar.  Before being treated, there are of course some brief questions that must be answered on your part.  The process is as follows:

Brief Questionnaire

Brief QuestionnaireUpon entering the clinic, we will ask you to fill out some brief paperwork concerning your overall health status.  This provides us with very important information concerning yourself as well as your past medical history.  This will help us a great deal in the examination process as well as in the creation of your personalized treatment plan designed for your specific needs

Consultation

Once the brief questionnaire is completed, you will have a one-on-one consultation with Dr. Skolar, Chiropractor to discuss your health-related problems and concerns. During the consultation, you will have the opportunity to ask as many questions as you wish. Questions pertaining to your health, chiropractic treatment options, as well as the safety & efficacy of treatment will be answered and discussed in great detail.  Chiropractic health care will be introduced to better educate our patients on the myths and facts surrounding chiropractic.

History & Physical Examination

Dr. Skolar will perform a thorough and detailed medical history asking you specific questions pertaining to your overall health. The health history will focus on your specific and past health related problems or concerns.  Afterwards, a number of specialized physical tests will be performed to determine the severity of your condition as well as to identify all of the related structures that are not functioning properly. The physical examination will also consist of a postural analysis, orthopedic and neurological exam.

X-Ray Examination

X-Ray Your specific condition may require that radiographs (x-rays) be taken.  This will allow us to further evaluate your condition, which will help rule out more serious conditions and assist us in developing the most effective treatment plan for you.  X-rays are useful tools in visualizing bones beneath the surface of the skin that may be injured due to trauma or disease processes.  This will help in pin-pointing a precise diagnosis.  X-rays are not mandatory.  It is after the history and physical examination that Dr. Skolar will make the decision as to whether x-rays are required.

Explanation of Physical Exam & X-Rays

After the physical exam and x-rays (if necessary), Dr. Skolar will provide you with a detailed explanation of all relevant findings pertaining to your health.  A diagnosis will be established and treatment recommendations will be provided. Treatment options will also be discussed to determine the best course of action for your specific needs.  You will also be provided with the prescribed treatment plan for the recovery for your condition.

Same-Day Treatment

X-Ray Explanation Once all specific diagnostic tests have been established, and a diagnosis confirmed, patients will receive their first treatment that same day.  Treatment may include highly specialized soft tissue therapeutic techniques (A.R.T.®), trigger point therapy, spinal mobilizations, spinal manipulative therapy, electrotherapy (TENS, microcurrent, interferential current (IFC), electric-muscle stimulation, hi-low volt, ice / heat therapy, to name but a few).Dr. Skolar integrates specific soft tissue therapeutic techniques with spinal manipulative therapy.  This combination helps to reduce the accumulation of stress and tension in the body.  This in turn leads to better pain relief and longer lasting results.

Home-Care Instructions

Physical Exam ExplanationAfter the examination and treatment, all patients will be given home care instructions.  This includes certain activities that should be avoided or specific procedures that should be implemented at home to accelerate the healing process (for example:  ice or heat applications, avoidance of certain activities, postural modifications when lifting objects or bending forwards, as well as specific stretches and/or exercises, and which foods should be avoided and those nutritional supplements that promote and accelerate healing.

Schedule Your Next Appointment (Follow-Up Visit)

After your treatment, you will be given a follow-up visit at a time that is convenient for you.  Patients are generally seen within 2-3 days following their initial treatment. Dr. Skolar will outline in detail the frequency and duration of treatment at the clinic which is based upon your specific needs. Remember, healing is a process that takes time.  Every person heals at a different rate. Accelerated healing comes with each treatment. Therefore, it is very important that you follow through with your treatment plan.  The speed at which you heal is determined by the severity of your problems, your overall health status, as well as on your compliancy with the specific treatment plan prescribed for you.
